HUGUENOT PROJECT / PALISSY – BEDSIDE CABINET

This project was a response to a brief to design and make a piece of contemporary furniture with reference to the Huguenots - French protestant refugees who arrived in the East End of London having fled France to escape from radical papist persecutors. Their skills in weaving, silversmithing, ceramics and furniture inspired a revolution in craftmanship and making.

This piece was inspired by the Huguenot ceramicist Bernard Palissy - using the two dimensional gekko motif which is inlaid into the inner drawer base as a link to the three dimensional gekko which sometimes appears on his plates.

It was selected for an exhibition of contemporary design inspired by the Huguenots and shown in the Huguenot Church, Soho Square as part of the SOHO CREATE 2015 festival.
